Love letters for her: 12 examples for your girlfriend or wife
Quick answer
A good love letter for her is specific, honest and written in your normal voice. Start with one real moment, tell her two or three small things you notice and love about her, say what she has changed in your life, and end with something you're looking forward to together. Half a page is enough if every line is about her.

Ask a woman if she still has a love letter someone gave her, and there's a decent chance she'll know exactly which drawer it's in. Maybe it's tucked inside a book. Maybe it's in a shoebox with movie tickets and an old bracelet. A letter is small, but it sticks around.
The good news: you don't need to be a poet to write one. The letters people keep are rarely fancy. They're specific. They mention the way she laughs at her own jokes, the time she drove three hours to bring you soup, the song she sings off-key in the shower.
Below you'll find a quick fill-in builder, 12 love letters for her sorted by situation, short notes for sticky notes and lunch bags, and a few things to avoid. Change everything in [brackets] to your own details. Want the full method first? Read our guide on how to write a love letter.
Build your own letter in five lines
Short on time, or staring at a blank page? Fill in this table and you have a love letter. Write each line as one or two sentences, in the order shown.
| Line | What to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Open | Say why you're writing | "I've been meaning to tell you something for a while." |
| 2. A memory | One real moment, with a detail | "The night the power went out and we played cards by candlelight." |
| 3. What you notice | Two or three small habits you love | "How you hum when you cook. How you text me when you land." |
| 4. What she changed | How life is better with her | "You made me less scared of trying new things." |
| 5. Look ahead | A plan or a promise you'll keep | "Let's go back to that lake this summer." |
Quick tip
Line 3 does the heavy lifting. Most people write "you're beautiful and kind." She's heard that. Write the thing only you would notice, like the way she reads the last page of a book first.

12 love letters for her
1. A love letter for a new girlfriend
Early on, write about what you've noticed so far, not about forever. Light and a little funny works better than intense.
Last Friday you made the waiter laugh so hard he forgot our order. Then you apologized to him for it. I spent the rest of dinner trying not to look too happy.
I like how you ask follow-up questions. I like that you remembered my brother's name after hearing it once. I like your laugh, especially the one that turns into a snort. No big promises here. I'm just really glad I met you. [Your name]"
2. A love letter for a girlfriend of a few years
Since then you've seen me sick, broke, grumpy and very bad at assembling furniture. You stayed anyway. You still sing in the car when you think I'm not listening. You still steal the blanket, and I still let you.
The thing I love most is how you make plain days feel like ours. Grocery runs. Sunday mornings. Burnt toast. I'd pick all of it again. Let's go back to [the place you had your first date] this month. My treat. Love, [your name]"
3. A love letter for your wife
Today you handled [the move, your mom's appointment, the kids, the work deadline] like it was nothing. It wasn't nothing. I saw how tired you were, and you still checked if I'd eaten.
I married the kindest person I know. I don't say it enough, so here it is in writing: I love you, I'm proud of you, and I'm lucky. Tomorrow, coffee is on me and so are the dishes. Your husband, [name]"
4. A love letter for a wife of many years
After decades together, the romance lives in the details: the hard days, the quiet help, the habits you'd miss. Write about those.
When we met, I loved how you looked in that green dress. I still do. But what I love now is quieter. The way you know what I need before I do. The way you sat in the hospital hallway with me and didn't say a word, because you knew words wouldn't help.
Growing old with you doesn't scare me. Thank you for choosing me back, every year. Still yours, [name]"
5. A love letter for a long distance girlfriend
If you can, mail it. Paper that traveled across the country (or an ocean) to reach her feels different from a text. Spray a little of your cologne on it if that's your style.
I miss you in small ways. Your toothbrush next to mine. Your cold feet on my legs. The way you narrate cooking shows like a sports game. The distance is hard and I won't pretend it isn't. But I've never once wondered if you're worth it.
[Number] days left. I've already planned the first night: your favorite pizza, no phones, and I'm not letting go of your hand for a while. Love you across every mile, [your name]"

6. A love letter after a fight
Skip "I'm sorry you feel that way" and skip any line that starts with "but." Name what you did, say what you'll change, and offer a next step. If the fight was big, talk first and give the letter after. A letter backs up an apology. It can't replace one.
You didn't overreact. You told me how you felt, and I made it about me. That's on me, not you.
Here's what I want you to know. You matter more to me than being right. I'm going to [do the specific thing differently], and you can call me on it if I slip. I love you. Can I take you for a walk tonight and listen properly this time? [Your name]"
7. A love letter for her birthday
This year I watched you [start the new job, run your first 10K, take care of your dad]. You were brave and you didn't make a fuss about it. I noticed. I'm so proud of you.
Today you're not allowed to plan anything, cook anything or apologize for anything. That's my job. Love, [your name]"
8. A love letter when she's had a hard week
This is not the time for solutions. She probably knows what's wrong. She needs to hear that she's doing okay and that you've got the next few hours handled.
You are doing so much better than you think. You kept going on days that would have flattened most people. You're allowed to rest. You're allowed to cry in the car. You're allowed to cancel plans and eat cereal for dinner.
I'm right here. Tonight I'll handle dinner and the dishes, and you get the couch and the remote. I love you. [Your name]"
9. A love letter to say thank you
Lots of women carry what people call the "invisible work" of a home: birthdays, groceries, appointments, remembering. Naming it out loud is romantic. Really.
For buying the birthday cards for my family. For noticing when we're out of milk before I do. For texting me 'home safe?' every single time. For keeping a hundred small things running that I only see when you're away.
None of it is small to me. Thank you for building a life with me. I see all of it. Love, [your name]"
10. A love letter for a new mom
New parents are tired in a way that's hard to explain. Keep it short, tell her she's doing well, and attach a real offer of rest. The offer matters as much as the words.
You don't have to have it figured out. You're already a wonderful mom. And you're still you, the woman I fell for, even on the days you feel lost under all the laundry.
This Saturday I've got the morning shift. Sleep as long as you want. I love you both more than I can write. [Your name]"

11. The deep one (for a big moment)
Save this kind for a wedding morning, a big anniversary, a proposal or after something hard you got through together. Write a rough draft, sleep on it, then copy out the clean version by hand.
Before you, I thought I was fine on my own. I was, kind of. Then you showed up and I found out how much better life could be. You made me braver. You made me softer. You made me laugh on days I was sure I couldn't.
I don't know everything about our future. I know I want you in all of it. Whatever comes, I'm on your side. Always. I love you with everything I've got. [Your name]"
12. A love letter for no reason at all
You were reading on the couch with your feet tucked under you and your glasses sliding down, and I thought: that's my favorite person. So I wanted to tell you. I love you. That's the whole letter. Dinner Friday? I'll book it. [Your name]"
Short love notes for her
A whole letter isn't always the move. Write one of these on a sticky note and leave it on the mirror, in her coat pocket or inside the book she's reading.
- "You looked so pretty this morning I forgot where I put my keys. Not that I'm blaming you. I'm blaming you."
- "Thank you for being the best part of my day. Again."
- "I'd still pick you on your grumpiest day. Especially then."
- "Proud of you. Go get them today."
- "You. Me. Takeout. Tonight. Don't plan anything else."
- "Just checking: you know you're amazing, right? Okay, good."

What to leave out
A love letter can go wrong in a few predictable ways. Here's what we'd skip:
- Comments about her body that she might not love. "You look great even after the baby weight" lands badly. Compliment what she does and who she is, or keep looks compliments simple and kind.
- Comparisons to exes. Even nice ones. Leave them out completely.
- A hidden ask. If the letter ends with "so can we finally get a dog," it's not a love letter anymore.
- Copy-pasted poetry. One short quote is fine. A whole poem you found online feels borrowed, because it is.
- Promises you won't keep. Promise something small and real instead.
How to give it to her
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Morning | Leave it next to her coffee mug or on the bathroom mirror before you head out. |
| Midday | Slip it into her bag, laptop case or the book she's reading. She'll find it at a random moment. |
| By mail | Send it with a stamp, even if you live together. Real mail with your handwriting is rare and fun to open. |
| With a gift | Tuck it into her birthday or anniversary card, or tape it to the box so she reads it first. |
| Out loud | For a big moment, read it to her yourself. Your voice shaking a little is part of the gift. |

From our side: plain words win
We help people put their feelings into words every day, and the same worry comes up again and again: "I'm not a good writer." Then they answer a few simple questions. How did you meet? When did you know? What little things do you love about her? What would you say on the last page?
What comes back is never polished. It doesn't need to be. "She always saves me the crispy corner of the lasagna" says more than a paragraph about stars and oceans. Write the way you talk. One true detail beats ten pretty adjectives. And if you get stuck, go back to line 3 of the builder above.

Frequently asked questions
What should I write in a love letter to her?
Start with one real memory, then name two or three small things she does that you love, say how she has made your life better, and end with a plan or promise. Use your normal words. Specific details matter far more than fancy ones.
How long should a love letter for my girlfriend be?
Half a page to one page, roughly 100 to 300 words, is plenty for most moments. Early in a relationship, shorter is better. Save longer letters for anniversaries, proposals or wedding days.
Should I handwrite a love letter or type it?
Handwrite it if you can. Paper is easy to keep, and your handwriting makes it feel personal. If your handwriting is hard to read, type a draft first, then copy it out slowly. A typed letter or long text is still better than no letter.
What do I write in a love letter to my wife after many years?
Write about the life you've built: a hard time she got you through, a habit of hers you'd miss, something she does that nobody thanks her for. Long-married couples often value gratitude and small details more than big romantic lines.
Can I use one of these example letters as is?
Use them for the shape and swap in your own details. She knows how you talk, so a letter copied word for word may feel off. Change every bracket, add one memory only you two share, and it becomes yours.
